Veliky Novgorod.

The oldest city in Russia, medieval centre of trades and crafts, boundless field for research by historians, architects and archaeologists — all this is Veliky Novgorod.


This is a place where you can see with your own eyes the ancient stone temples, you can participate in the battles of contemporary warriors and read the famous birch-bark scrolls. Troops started for battles from these ancient Kremlin walls, legendary merchant and musician Sadko used to sing his enchanting songs while sitting on the bank of the Ilmen Lake, and the Volkhov river. Through Great Novgorod in the ancient time passed the well-known trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The city kept contacts between Slavs and Norsemen.


“The Millenium of Russia” monument was set up here in 1862, celebrating 1000 years since the state settlement.


Unique architectural  monuments of Novgorod , such as Novgorod Kremlin, St. Sophia Cathedral (1045-1050), churches  Spasa on Nereditse and Spasa on Kovaleve,  are entered into the list of the UNESCO World Heritage. Art historians compared Novgorod to Florence on riches saved on walls of cathedrals and temples of monumental painting. The exclusive frescos of Feofan Greek were preserved and can be seen in the church of the Transfiguration-on-Ilyina.

Great Novgorod is an administrative centre of the Novgorod region in a northwest part of the Russian Federation. Great Novgorod is located  552 km away from Moscow (to the northwest), 6 km away from lake Ilmen, on both banks of the river Volkhov. The city was first mention in chronicles in 859 year. In 862 year Great Novgorod became the first capital of Russian state. The city area is 90 sq.km. The population of Great Novgorod is about 200 thousand persons.  The Time — Moscow time (GMT+3)


The climate is moist and moderate continental, with four definite seasons. Winter is snowy, summer is sunny, and in May-June there is the time of famous “white nights”.


Transportation
The basic automobile, railway, air and water transport highways connect The Great Novgorod with St.-Petersburg and Moscow. The public transport provides 30 bus and 3 trolleybus routes, with the maximum interval of seven minutes.
