City at a glance
Novosibirsk is the nearest big city to the geographical center of Russia located on the picturesque banks of the wide and beautiful Ob River. It is the third-largest city after Moscow and Saint-Petersburg and the largest city in Siberia, with population exceeding 1.43 mln people. Novosibirsk is the administrative center of Novosibirsk region as well as of the Siberian Federal District. Novosibirsk is first in Siberia in which a metro system was established (opened in 1985).

It is also a world known scientific center with The Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and branches of the Medical and Agricultural Academies located in Novosibirsk.

Novosibirsk won the 1 prize in the all-Russia contest “The most comfortable city of Russia 2007” in category “Administrative centers of Russian Federation”.

The climate is sharply continental, with severely cold winters. Snow is frequent, falling on almost half of winter days. Travelers coming from countries with mild climates may find Novosibirsk’s winter tough, but it will not be extraordinary for those from northern countries. Average daily temperatures stand at -20°C in January and +20°C in July. Local time is three hours ahead of Moscow and 6 hours ahead of Greenwich (GMT +6).

The city is served by Tolmachevo and Eltsovka airports with regular flights to Moscow and other Russian , European  and Asian cities. Regular train connections are established. Novosibirsk is one of the key-points of the Trans-Siberian rail route.
