The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg. It was founded in 1703 and was meant to protect the future city from possible attacks by the Swedish army and navy. The day of the fortress foundation is celebrated nowadays as St. Petersburg Birthday. Throughout the years the fortress was used in many different ways, but it never saw any military actions, for the Swedes were defeated before the fortress was even completed. Still due to its location and architecture it housed the city's garrison and was a high security political jail. Rivers, channels and bridges without entering Neva River with individual transfers and personal guide (English, German, French or Japanese speaking)

Saint Petersburg is often called "Venice of the North" because of the large number of small rivers and canals that divide the city into the islands, connected by bridges. Some bridges are true works of art with an incredible history, such as Anichkov Bridge. The biggest bridges across the Neva River are drawn at night to let ships pass in and out of the Baltic Sea into the Volga-Baltic waterway system. Therefore, during summer period, a boat tour among the rivers and canals of the historic center of St. Petersburg is an essential, very popular and extremely enjoyable part of city exploration. Also, if desired, night boat tours and cruises accompanied by a folklore show and/or a light dinner on board can be arranged.
