Meet with your guide for the half day sightseeing tour of Russia’s second largest city, called Venice of the North because of the numerous canals and islands. Get acquainted with the history of the city created by Peter the Great to be his “window to Europe” and Russia’s new capital. St Petersburg is the city of palaces and museums, broad avenues and beautiful bridges. See Nevsky Prospect with such architectural masterpieces as the Admiralty, majestic Kazan Cathedral, picturesque Russian-style Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, Gostiny Dvor shopping mall, magnificent Anichkov Bridge, Alexander Nevsky Lavra with charming Trinity Cathedral and the cemetery where Dostoevsky and other Russian celebrities are buried.
Drive along the Neva River embankments to view the imperial Winter Palace and now world renowned Hermitage museum, Peter and Paul Fortress, St Isaac’s Cathedral, the Bronze Horseman.
Take pictures of the Spilled Blood Cathedral. Enjoy the Square of Arts with a cluster of museums, theatres and concert halls, all built in similar design to form a perfect architectural ensemble. Visit the Palace Square to marvel at Alexander Column, the world’s biggest free-standing monument and the Triumphal Arch of the General Staff building.
You continue your visit to Peter and Paul Fortress the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706-1740. In the early 20th century, it was still used as a prison by the tsarist government.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg’s History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint.
In the afternoon you guided tour takes you to Winter Palace now the famous Hermitage. The State Hermitage is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious museums. The collection started by Catherine the Great boasts over 3 million exhibits from fascinating Scythian gold articles and Oriental treasures to masterpieces by great Renaissance masters and French impressionists. The Hermitage collection is so large that if you saw all the works on display and stopped for one minute viewing each exhibit, it would take you approximately nine years to explore the whole collection.
