Catherine Palace

Tsarskoye Selo

The second half of the tour is dedicated to visiting the State Museum-Preserve Tsarskoye Selo (modern Pushkin) located not far from Pavlovsk and built in the mid-18th century for Empress Elizabeth by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect of the Winter Palace. Tsarskoye Selo palace and park ensemble is the second suburban Imperial summer residence of the Romanovs, after Peterhof, and an outstanding world-rank monument in terms of its architecture and a historical importance. It is home to two magnificent palaces: the majestic Russian Baroque Catherine Palace, a central part of the ensemble, and the Alexander Palace, a neoclassical masterpiece of the 18th century.

The tour includes a visit to the Catherine Palace where visitors can admire the Great Hall, an enormous gilded ballroom; the Picture Gallery with paintings by European masters; the Golden Enfilade of state rooms; and the magnificently re-created world-famous Amber Room decorated with natural amber of different colors. The tour also gives an opportunity to explorer the splendid landscaped Catherine Park - a perfect example of fine gardening - consisting of the Regular and English parts and housing numerous historical monuments scattered around: intimate pavilions, bridges, marble statues, exotic structures imitating Gothic, Turkish and Chinese architecture, and much more. Tsarskoye Selo is also famous for the Lyceum, where Alexander Pushkin studied and earned his first reputation as a poet. As an additional option for extra charge, visits can be organized to the Alexander Palace and Alexander Park, as well as expositions and displays in other parts of the Tsarskoye Selo estate complex.
