The Russian Museum was established in 1895 as the first official state museum of the Russian fine art in the country. Started by Emperor Alexander III, nowadays the museum largest collection of Russian art in the world has grown to over 400,000 artworks. It embraces all forms, genres, schools and movements of art from ancient icons to avant-garde artwork. The heart of the museum collection is comprised of oil painting, sculpture, graphic, decorative and applied art.
The tour includes visit to the main complex of museum buildings - the Mikhailovsky Palace, a masterpiece of Russian Neoclassical architecture, and Benois Wing, built at the beginning of the 20th century as the Exhibition Pavilion of the Academy of Art. The main museum complex houses the permanent exhibitions of the Russian Museum. These displays trace the complete history of Russian art from its roots in the 10th century to modern times and include works by the most prominent Russian artists — Andrei Rublev, Dionisius, Dmitry Levitsky, Karl Brullov, Orest Kiprensky, Alexander Ivanov, Ilya Repin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ivan Shishkin, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel, Boris Kustodiev, Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and many others. As an additional option for extra charge, visits can be organized to other expositions and displays that are located at the Museum’s branches in Mramorny (Marble) Palace, Mikhailovsky Castle and Stroganov Palace.
