The State Hermitage Museum is one of the largest and most significant museums in the world, which has about three million of artworks and monuments from all over the world. The museum’s unique collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, objects of applied art, archaeological finds and numismatic exhibits. The main museum complex is located in the famous Winter Palace of the Russian sovereigns.

Hermitage

The collection of the State Hermitage includes over 3 million works of art and world culture artefacts. It contains paintings, graphic works, sculptures, works of applied art, archaeological artefacts and numismatic objects.

Founding of the Museum

The Hermitage is considered to be founded in 1764, when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of works from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky.

The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, St. Catherine’s Day.

The ticket offices close 30 minutes before museum closure
Holidays: 10.30-18.00. Closed: January 1 and May 9
On days preceding holidays the museum closes an hour earlier Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works are on display in the General Staff Building.
